SEPULTURA Frontman Says Reunion Rumors Are Fueled By Greed
August 14, 2007SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green has dismissed persistent talk of a reunion of the band's classic lineup as "just rumors," insisting that the the only people who are constantly pushing for the reformation are music industry professionals who "wanna make a lot of money very fast."
Speaking to a German radio station on August 1, 2007, Green commented on the SEPULTURA reunion talk by saying, "I think Max [Cavalera, former SEPULTURA/current SOULFLY frontman], he really uses the media to voice a lot of different things. I don't really use the media for that. I like people to really see for themselves. I would hope they would be open-minded enough to actually check [out the new SEPULTURA music with Green on vocals]. And there are people that do that. And when they do, then they realize, 'Wow, this is great.' I'm open-minded enough to even have seen the [SOULFLY] shows… like, SOULFLY I've seen two times — in the very beginning and last year when we were in the U.S. I think that a lot of people just kiss ass for so many years or whatever. They're just like, 'Oh my God…' It's just the way it is. But I think, from this [new SEPULTURA] album ['Dante XXI'], there's definitely been an evolution from when I first [joined SEPULTURA] to now, and I think a lot of people that are really into music and not just into the politics and, like, what's cool or whatever, then they would actually see that, and see, like, 'Wow, there is a lot of really great things that have happened and an evolution, and a lot of creativity happening.' And especially with the last album, I think, it was the best reaction for me from a lot of fans, and I think it will help push the next album — you know, anticipation, like, 'Wow, what's gonna happen next?' Unfortunately, there's been a lot of things that just happened that have taken away from the actual album ['Dante XXI'] and the music — with Igor [Cavalera, drums] leaving… that was right when the album came out. Everyone was looking at that, like, 'Oh my god, I can't believe that.' But the whole reunion thing is just something, again… like, a lot of people wanna make money, so they constantly talk about it. Those people wanna do it more than us. I mean, we never talked to him — I never met him [Max]; Andreas [Kisser, guitar] [and] Paulo [Xisto Pinto Jr., bass] haven't talked to him [since Max left the band in 1996]. It's all rumors. I think he's doing a new band now with Igor. Igor doesn't wanna do SEPULTURA — that's why he left. He's doing something different now. So it's, again, rumors — a group of people that wanna make a lot of money very fast."
When it was pointed out to Derrick that Andreas and Paulo have repeatedly been asked about the possibility of reunion with Max in interviews and have never ruled it out, Green replied, "Yeah. I mean, you never know what could happen. But in reality, it doesn't seem likely at all."
